P-47 SS

Solid State Large Diaphragm Condenser

The Peluso P-47 SS is a large diaphragm condenser microphone styled after the legendary Neumann U 47.

A solid-state gain stage replaces the steel vacuum tube with a FET, providing a much lower noise floor and a cleaner sound overall. The P-47 SS has a wide dynamic range that is as capable of capturing subtle intricate detail as it is a crisp loud kick drum. It handles transients with a very quick and detailed capture, excellent for guitar and vocal work. This classic single back plate dual-diaphragm condenser capsule provides a unique bell shaped proximity effect. This can provide a low-end enhancement excellent for broadcast vocals. An on-board 75Hz low-end roll-off will temper this proximity effect when not desired. The Peluso P-47 SS is a rich detailed microphone with lots of character that will be a welcome addition to your microphone locker.

Nothing captures the boom of a kick drum’s resonant head or the growl of a bass cab quite like a Neumann U 47fet… But since I mostly record at home, I never thought a U 47fet was worth the investment, especially if I’m only going to use it on only one or two sources. The Peluso Microphone Lab's P-47 SS completely changed my mind. It’s a highly versatile mic that shines in a host of applications, from hushed vocals to screaming guitar amps. While it retains all of the desirable sonic qualities of the original Neumann U 47fet, it adds several other features that make it a much more versatile mic.

Headliner Magazine Logo

The P-47 SS is sonically big, bold and smooth, yet nicely clear and open. The main word I keep landing on to describe the top-end signature of the P-47 SS is dry. While the P-47 SS offers more top end than a U 47 FET, this is only noticeable when directly compared. The P-47 SS is clear and clean, but it’s not a bright mic. Side-by-side with the solid state Peluso P-414 (reviewed May 2019), the low-end capture of the P-47 SS is more forward and weighted, with a fuller, more forward midrange. You could say the P-47 SS is bolder and more forceful, while the P-414 is more open and polite. The P-47 SS also exhibits an excellently focused capture, with a bold proximity effect and swift yet smooth off-axis rejection, especially in Fig. 8 mode. The omni pattern opens the mic up more, maintaining the smooth top-end clarity but taming the low end, making it a great choice as a distance or room mic.
